A carer is someone who spends time, unpaid, looking after a relative, child, partner, neighbour or a friend who has a mental health problem and/or has physical disabilities or learning difficulties. Q. I do not live with the person I support. Am I still a carer? Yes. Jane looks after her mother who lives in the next village and has been diagnosed with dementia. What is a Carers Assessment? Is it an assessment of my ability to look after the person I care for? A Carers Assessment is your opportunity to tell us about the things that could make caring easier for you, so we can see how to help you. It is not a test of your ability to care, nor is it a financial assessment. You are entitled to a review of your Carers Assessment annually. Q. Does having a Carers Assessment entitle me to a Carers Allowance? Carers Allowance is a benefit for people who regularly spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone with a mental health problem and /or with a physical disability or learning difficulty who receives a Disability Living Allowance (middle or higher rate for personal care) or Attendance Allowance. If you work you must not earn more than 100 a week, although this figure is revised every April, so be sure to check. You must also check that you are eligible if you are claiming other benefits. Q. What services could be available to me as a carer? There are a range of services which could be accessed depending on your personal circumstances.
